Jordan won a bronze medal in the individual competition at the second International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence (IOAI 2025), hosted by the Chinese capital, Beijing. This medal was won by Islam Daraghmeh, a student from the Model School of Yarmouk University, after the Model School team qualified for this international Olympiad, having won gold and silver medals in the local competitions of the Olympiad, organized by the Applied Science University earlier this year. This is Jordan's first victory in this competition at the international level.
The idea behind this Olympiad, a new global competition launched by Google and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, is to test the skills of high school students in three areas of artificial intelligence: machine science, computer vision, and natural language processing, through competition in the three tracks. In the Artificial Intelligence and Applications Knowledge Track, the competition used multiple-choice questions to measure the students' knowledge of artificial intelligence. The second track involved solving a set of problems using Python (a programming language used in internet applications, software development, data science, and machine learning) in the form of a question for a problem to be solved using the student's skills in this language.
The third track involved using a dataset and building a model to make a prediction, whether for a specific goal or within a specific domain.
Student Daraghmeh emphasized that the participation in this international Olympiad was highly competitive, with the participation of 284 students from 60 countries around the world, including the United States, China, Japan, Canada, Australia, France, and Sweden.
He added that this achievement embodies the spirit and determination of the Jordanian people, emphasizing that this would not have been possible without the support and care that the Model School provides to its students. This is achieved by honing and enhancing students' scientific and educational skills and providing opportunities to participate in such local, regional, and international competitions. It is noteworthy that student Islam Draghmeh, a few days ago, achieved first place in the Yarmouk University Model School in the General Secondary Education Examination, with a score of 98.6.
