Geography Department was established at the beginning of the academic year 2000/2001. the demand for geographers in public and private schools especially in the northern region of the Kingdome was one of the major reasons for establishing this department in Yarmouk University. The main objective of the geography program is to give a through basis in the academic subjects and discipline in geography including advanced technology such as digital-based map production and computer-based geographic information systems.

The department admitted more than 180 students in its first semester and 100 students in the second.

The study plan is divided into 3 tracks: General Geography, Geographic Information System, Regional Planning. The student studies 54 credit hours of the total 132 in general geography, then he/she chooses 21 credit hours in one of the 3 previous tracks as basic courses. Then he/she chooses 12 credit hours from a wide range of geography courses.

In the academic year 2008/2009, a tourist planning track was cancelled

From the plan of the department of geography. Instead, a geographic information system track was established . this new track is applied for students accepted in the first semester 2008/2009 .

As one of its aims is to teach its graduates some classical and modern techniques to carry on geographic research. The department plans to establish 3 laboratories : one for manual map drawing , the second for computer cartography and geographic information systems, and the third for climatologically measurements.
