This department was founded with the establishment of Yarmouk University in 1976 as one of the departments in Faculty of ArtsØ› in 1980 the department celebrated the first graduates. The MA program was started in February, 1981 in two track graduate studies program in Literature and Literary Criticism; Language and Syntax. More than 250 MA theses were defended in this department since 1981. The program of PH.D.in Literature and Literary Criticism was started, and the first thesis was defended in August 1997. Another major of Language and Syntax was followed in the PH.D. program in September 1998 The third PH.D program in Arabic Applied Linguistics was followed with the cooperation of Faculty of Education,
The department keeps good relations with many Arab and International Universities of the same interests. In this frame work, a contract was signed between the University and high institutes in Malaysia.
The department holds a biannual conference on Literary Criticism in Yarmouk University since 1987. The first conference was held in the period form 20-23/7/1987 and the conference is continued to be held regularly. The twelfth conference was held in July, 2006 under the title (The Interaction of Literary Genres).
The number of teaching staff is 45 members, 26 full professors, 8 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 4 teaching assistants, and 1 lecturers.
The academic members are active participants in all conferences, symposiums, scientific meetings inside and outside Jordan; the academic staff are also in charge for teaching MA courses, in addition to supervising students' theses in both MA. and PH.D. programs in Literature and Literary Criticism, Syntax and Grammar, and Applied Linguistics.
