Tempus Project for Cultural Heritage


The Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology at Yarmouk University was established in 1984, as the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, aiming at conducting interdisciplinary researches and promoting public awareness of cultural heritage of Jordan and the Arab World. The Faculty comprises four departments: Archaeology, Anthropology, Epigraphy, and Conservation and Management of Cultural Resources. The Faculty also has the following units: Museum of Jordanian Heritage, Laboratories Unit, and Deir 'Alla Station for Archaeological Research.

The Faculty houses tow scientific chairs regulated by the university instructions and regulations: Mahmoud al-Ghul chair for Studies of the Civilization and Epigraphy of Arabian Peninsula, and Samir Shamma chair for Islamic Numismatics and Civilization.

The teaching staff at the Faculty's departments has conducted a number of researches and field projects related to their disciplines in cooperation with local and foreign academic institutions. These projects have provided the opportunity of field training to students.

The Faculty has also cooperated with institutions in the areas of its specialization at the local, regional and international levels through the European Commission (TEMPUS), in addition to the agreements signed with a number of Arab and foreign academic institutions.

 

The Department of Archaeology

The department of Archaeology was established in 1984. It awards the bachelor's degree in archaeology and the master's degree in Ancient Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Islamic Archaeology, Numismatics, and Applied Sciences in Archeology. The Faculty members conduct excavations and field projects in archaeological sites, which usually carried out in collaboration with foreign universities and institutions.

 

The Department of Anthropology 

The Department of Anthropology was established in 1984. It awards the bachelor's degree in Anthropology and the master's degrees in Social and in Physical Anthropology. The department has specialized laboratories for the study and treatment of skeletal remains. The department has conducted many field studies related to the Jordanian society and its culture.

 

The Department of Epigraphy

The Department of Epigraphy was established in 1985 to train students as specialists in the field of ancient eastern epigraphy, publish inscriptions that were discovered in Jordan. The Department offers master's degree in the fields of the North West Semitic Epigraphy, North and South Arab Epigraphy, and Greek and Latin Epigraphy. The Department established the Annual Colloquium of Ancient Epigraphy and Calligraphy as a periodic forum for scholars in Epigraphy.

 

The Department of Conservation and Management of Cultural Resources

The department was established in 1999 aiming at keeping pace with the ongoing development in studying and conserving the cultural heritage. The Department awards bachelor's degree in Conservation and Management of Cultural Resources, and three master's programs: the Management of Cultural Resources, the Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Archaeometry.

 

The Museum of Jordanian Heritage

The Museum of Jordanian Heritage was established in 1988 in cooperation with the German Government aiming at highlighting the research and field projects conducted by the Faculty researchers and technicians, whether independently or in cooperation with other local and foreign institutes. The Museum recounts the story of mankind in Jordan from its earliest stages until today.

The objectives of the Museum of Jordanian Heritage are:

- To preserve the national cultural heritage through artifact preservation, provide the proper documentation, establish the provenance of the objects, and restore them when needed in the conservation lab.

- The Museum’s collections that are chronologically classified are useful tools in teaching processes where students can examine and compare various types of artifacts from various locations that are chronologically varied.

- The Museum promotes the Jordanian cultural heritage through presenting a coherent story of the cultural development that Jordan has passed. In addition, it opens its exhibits to the general public on a daily basis. The museum plays an important role in promoting public awareness by emphasizing the importance of the Jordanian heritage as an integral part of the world heritage. All of these can be achieved through the interaction with the local community using seminars, workshops, exhibits and specially designed educational programs for school children.

 

Laboratories Unit

The Laboratories Unit was established in 1994, aiming at keeping pace with developments in archaeology, anthropology, and the conservation of heritage sources, especially those related to the application of modern scientific methods to the study of man and material culture. The laboratory unit contributes to the training of qualified human cadres scientifically and technically to protect the cultural heritage of Jordan and reduce natural and human hazards threatening it.

The laboratory unit at the faculty includes laboratories in the areas of photography, surveying, drawing, analysis of artifacts, conservation of artifacts, geographic information systems, and distance learning. These laboratories support important field projects carried out by faculty members and students. In addition there are teaching laboratories in physical anthropology, and conservation and restoration of artifacts.
